Summer: Rutgers Study Abroad in Brazil – Art and Resistance offers students the chance to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture of Rio de Janeiro while developing language skills and exploring the intersections of art, history, and social change. Students begin with an intensive Portuguese language course at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC), designed to strengthen their ability to understand, speak, read, and write in Portuguese. Under the guidance of Rutgers faculty, they then transition into an experiential course that examines art as a form of resistance, with walks and tours to sites of historical and cultural significance across the city. Through this program, students will deepen their cultural awareness, sharpen their language proficiency, and gain critical insights into Brazil’s rich artistic traditions, ecological significance, and ongoing struggles with inequality. They will leave with a stronger global perspective, an appreciation for the ways art and activism intersect, and a firsthand understanding of how culture can drive social change.
