This study abroad course in Hungary explores how philanthropy and nonprofit organizations shape civic life in transitioning democracies. Through visits to NGOs, discussions with community leaders, and comparisons between civil society in Hungary and the United States, students will examine grassroots initiatives and global giving strategies while gaining firsthand insights into social change. Traveling through Budapest, Győr, and Szeged, participants will experience Hungary’s rich culture and history alongside its evolving civic landscape, developing cultural awareness and a deeper global perspective on democracy, philanthropy, and civic engagement.
