The Caribbean and the 21st Century is a one-credit interdisciplinary immersion program that examines the history, culture, and experiences of Black people across the African Diaspora with a focus on the Caribbean. In Bridgetown, Barbados, students will visit sites such as the Newton Burial Ground, Rock Hall Freedom Village, and PEG Farm at Easy Hall Plantation, while engaging in dialogue with local scholars, community members, and peers. Through these experiences, students will gain a deeper understanding of the enduring impact of colonization, the resilience of Afro-Caribbean culture, and the intersections of history, identity, and social justice. They will leave the program with expanded cultural awareness, critical perspectives on the African Diaspora, and the ability to connect past struggles with contemporary efforts toward equity and justice.
